I just realized that I am wearing several layers of blue from the blue checked sneakers on my feet to the blue pearl necklace around my neck. In between, I’m wearing dark blue jeans and a blue t-shirt under a blue sweater. When I turned on my computer, I was met by a new desktop of blue mountains. Since blue is my favorite color, I hope this bodes well for my day. 😉

Hmmm. I don’t think I’m being curmudgeonly or old-fashioned but … really … does every movie under the sun have to come out in 3D and be organ-rattlingly loud? Where does cinema and the entertainment world go from here? Perhaps back to the basics. Here’s my two cents: I think the next cinematic revolution will be silent, black and white films. Unless there’s such a thing as 4D programming. Is there?
I was surprised to see, after a cursory search, that there’s still quite a bit of activity around silent films. There’s Silent Movie Mondays taking place in Seattle, and there was a silent film festival in Kansas this past February. And here’s the blog for Ben Model a silent film music accompanist, and his 2010 road schedule. And here’s a neat blog called The Bioscope “reporting on the world of early and silent cinema.”
Some of my favorites: Son of the Sheik with Rudolf Valentino, The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney, anything with Charlie Chaplan and anything with Lillian Gish.

Windows and Doorways

Yesterday I found an essay that I called The Watchers. It was a very short, personal piece about my mother and I, and how from her I learned to observe the world through the windows and doorways of our home. Though the woman I knew stayed close to home, and she made clear her worries for me as I ventured further and further from the nest, she eventually encouraged my wanderlust. And, she always encouraged me to tell her stories from my travels.
Today, I find that I am still quite drawn to doors, doorways and windows in my life and travels. They are portals into and between worlds. I did indeed used to tell my mom what I saw through the open windows of my dorm rooms, my hotels rooms at conferences, my apartments, etc. Though my mom is now gone, I find that I still use that “technique” to give people a view of what I see and experience around me, whether it is in writing or through my photography.

Writer’s Block … Of Sorts

A beautiful fall day. I sit at my computer staring through the window at sunlight shining down on the oak tree. I have many projects to work on, either for myself or for clients. Yet all I want to do is curl up in a quilt with a cup of something warm and watch the tree branches dance in the wind.
