I have been having great difficulty photographing sunflowers. Somehow the image of the whole flower is never quite right. Finally I decided to stop worrying about the mythic image and enjoy the beauty of the abstract.

I have been having great difficulty photographing sunflowers. Somehow the image of the whole flower is never quite right. Finally I decided to stop worrying about the mythic image and enjoy the beauty of the abstract.

What beautiful and cheerful flowers 🙂
Reblogged this on Tracey in Maine.
Abstract is never the fix for a photograph that fails. Without knowing the camera that you are using, I think that some of the problems you are experiencing are exposure and shutter speed.
Finally figured it out!
Turn the sunflower toward the window – maybe a 3/4 turn. Let the window light bathe over the texture of the flower. It will give you depth and detail of the petals.
You should be somewhat with your back to the window photographing the Sunflower. Play with that setup and you will be amazed.
Your original photographs had the light behind the Sunflower causing what is called “Back Lit” and somewhat “Flat Lighting”.
It’s all about lighting.
as always, your pictures are so lovely. the antidote to a bad day or the inspiration to have a good one.
