In a church, I walked into a room to photograph a specific set of stained glass windows that were at eye level, and when I turned to walk out I happened to look up and this is what I saw hanging on the wall. I don’t yet know the name of painter or painting. That research continues, and if you have any incites please let me know. I’m not a formal student of fine arts but I can imagine that there are layers upon layers of meaning in the choice of colors, the flowers shown, etc. More information to follow in the near future I hope.
Came by your blog through this beautiful #painting. Wonderful blog you’ve got here, Cynthia π
Unsure of the name – no fine arts student either!
I know Mary is usually depicted in blue.
The following is a guess, the on one knee represents humankind and the cross he is holding looks like what the cross-bearer holds from the start of Mass. (The cross-bearer walks in first, followed by others including one who holds the Bible and the last the priest (they all walk in a shape of a cross too)).
That kneel is a genuflect – what somebody does when they enter a Catholic church with the Holy Eucharist in the tabernacle. The Holy Eucharist is what Catholics believe to be the body of Christ. And this baby is genuflecting to Christ himself in this painting.
This painting shows the relationship of Mary being the tabernacle. In the Old Testament, the there was Moses’ tabernacle (that contained manna) then Mary (who bore Jesus). Each time, God renewing his promise of salvation. Both cases, the tabernacle is the point of contact for humankind to God (now through Mary, we have direct contact with God). This is symbolised by Mary bringing Jesus and humankind together in the painting.
It seems the main focus is on the one kneeling, as Mary and Jesus are gazing at this baby. Jesus is gifting a flower symbolising something significant I don’t know! Lilies are purity, though this is not one! From the guess of the symbolising above, I would think that it represents a reminder of God’s promise of salvation.
Long winded guess! Happy to hear your and others’ thoughts π
Thank you. That’s very helpful and much appreciated. π
