Dreamy are the images in Sky Tree, like viewing the world through a gentle mist.  A single tree is viewed throughout the season and becomes a gentle teaching tool about how the natural world works.  Though targeted to children, I certainly felt like I learned some things after reading this book  — about patience, about beauty and about perspective.  A great gift for a child of any age.

The Power of a Garden

“a child’s garden” is one of the most beautiful – and most political – children’s picture books Ive read in a while.  By Michael Foreman, it is a seemingly simple story of a little boy who finds a seedling.  He waters it.  The seedling grows into a garden filled with birds and butterflies.  The catch?  The garden covers a barbed wire fence, a fence dividing two people on one land.  And … I think that is all that I will share of this powerful little tale.  I look forward to tracking down more of the author/illustrator’s work.

Album Cover Images

I discovered a friend’s old album collection.  The music is beautiful and so is the cover art.  Two of the graphic artists who stand out most for me are Michael Rugg and Roger Huyssen (http://www.huyssen.com/).  One of the most fascinating facts I discovered about artist Rugg is that he is the founder of the Bigfoot Discovery Project!  http://bigfootdiscoveryproject.com/origin.php

A day that could easily have been described as “a glass half-empty” suddenly felt “half-full” as I opened my mail to discover the 2009 issue of the Rockhurst Review containing one of my photos, Dandelion.  The picture is simply that of a dandelion its golden flower gone to white tufted seed.  The seeds are blown away leaving a half-moon of whiteness with a circle of dark brown seeds in the center.  I remember taking that picture last summer, I think, in a strawberry field.  The strawberries were the focus of my camera that day, but it was the happenstance shot of a dandelion that brought me joy today.  Go figure. 😉
