I don’t know … I feel like I see a figure in the icicle.  A drooping shoulder.  A lean torso narrowing into nothingness as the sun melts its frame.  Perhaps I have been reading too many fantasy novels. What do you see? 😉

… it was to a lovely, if chilly, new spot for us, the Cutler Park Reservation.   We managed to do a loop around Kendrick Pond before the cold was just too much.  I’m looking forward to revisiting, especially in warmer weather.

As coffee brews in the morning, I find myself doing a quick scan of the windows to see the patterns of ice that have formed in the night.  Usually my attention is focused just on the windows, the ice crystals and the slow movement of light across the sky.

This morning, my eyes fell upon the white feather, an item I have photographed many times before.

It sits in a shallow dish on the window sill of my writing nook.  Today I noticed that its delicate barbs almost touched the nearby pane.  If it had, would it have been frozen as well?

Both infused and illuminated by sunlight, and juxtaposed against the growing blue of the sky and the sparkling crystals of the melting ice, well … the color-filled scene was near magical.

Still, after a while, I found myself switching to black and white on the camera.  Just to see what would happen.  I’m glad I did.

As much as I complain about the cold, I love winter’s light coming through the windows each morning.

How it shines on the walls and illuminates the most ordinary things making them extraordinary …

revealing fragile beautiful intricacies …

and delicate beauty.

Though I had to cancel a major trip, given the stories emerging about the impact of this most recent storm on the east coast, I certainly have nothing to complain about. Especially not when I can walk by the river and see these sights.

As I walked along the Charles River yesterday, I found myself transfixed by the winter grasses and the bared branches of the trees.  In the winter light, they became surreal.

Today, as I write this post, a gentle snow falls in the city.  I’ll be curious to see what the river looks like tomorrow!
