I’d like to cook with tumeric at some point right now I’m just enjoying the tea. A pleasure for multiple senses. On a gray day like today it is like having sunshine in a cup. As someone recently said to me take pleasure in the simple moments. Have a good day, people.

Rose Clouds in Virginia
Posted in Uncategorized on September 27, 2019| 1 Comment »
Virginia is not known as Big Sky country but it sure seemed that way to me and my younger brother Keith as we played in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Those experiences beneath the heavens shaped our future selves. Though I moved far away to another beautiful landscape, he often called to describe the beauty of the Virginia sky. He shared this picture with me nearly nine-years ago out of the blue reminding me of where I’d grown up. And today he is gone but forever with me. https://www.communityfuneralhomeinc.com/obituary/keith-staples

interlude: lamentations

As we approach June 6, I thought it appropriate to repost this “chapter” in the series I wrote walking through history with Joseph Anthony Horne (1911-1987). Enjoy.
Read previous Interludes here.
WWII: Europe: France; “Into the Jaws of Death — U.S. Troops wading through water and Nazi gunfire”, circa 1944-06-06, by Robert F. Sargent
On June 6, 1944, the Western Allies launched the invasion of Normandy. It would prove to be a pivotal point in the course of the war as soldiers, by air, land and sea, fought to liberate France from Germany. Troops landed at beaches all along the northern coast. As part of the larger strategy, four port cities were identified for capture to facilitate future entrance of Allied troops. One of these port cities was Le Havre. Secured in September 1944, the city would then be turned into a major entry and exit point for military personnel and equipment needed at the front.

And now that I am decidedly back in the U.S. for a bit, I am able to return to familiar haunts, like this Woburn field that I’ve been photographing over the years.

Well, what do you know! I’ve just been informed that today is National Cat Day. That’s all the excuse I need to share this photo of a friend’s kitten trying on her Halloween attire. I should mention that the friend happens to be an Egyptologist. Can you guess what the little one is meant to be? Take a good look at her headdress. Pharoah! 🙂

I’d previously shared in “when you look up” how a photograph of the painted ceilings of Trinity Church had inspired designer Donna McNett to produce a vibrantly hued men’s tie, bow tie and pocket square collection. She did an amazing job working with a single photograph to produce something truly unique that celebrates the beauty orchestrated by painter John La Farge and presents it with a modern twist.

For 2019 we hope to collaborate once more in the production of a matching shawl and perhaps silk square. Stay tuned for further updates about that! Meanwhile there are still a few ties and pocket squares on the shelves of the shop. Drop by to see for yourself.
