… vortex shedding in action. Ahem. In fluid dynamics, vortex shedding is an oscillating flow that takes place when a fluid, in this case water droplets from an humidifier, flows past a bluff body, which in this case I think are the leaves of the plants I have surrounding the humidifier. Hmmm. Anyway, when you’re stuck inside with a plasma physicist … well, I’ve learned that there are things I see as beautiful … and he does too … but he’s seeing something completely different from what I’m seeing and so I have learned when I see some cool effect to drag him away from whatever he is doing, point at my cool thing and ask, “So what’s happening here?” And in this case, he said matter of factly, “Oh, I think that’s vortex shedding. See the vortices forming there …oh, and over there …!”

And so it goes in our household at the moment. 🙂

Back home, I was racing up and down the stairs trying to photograph the morning sun as it struck the burnt orange leaves of the oak tree.  As I turned around to walk back down the stairs, I noticed the silhouette on the wall. For a while, I photographed those shadows, the subtle shift of the shapes as the wind stirred the branches outside, and inside, how my motion stirred the butterflies on the mobile hanging from the ceiling.

As for the orange leaves that first drew my attention … to my eyes, they are like stained glass.

I was walking along the Charles River, years ago, when I saw this hawk taking flight.  I just happened to bring my camera up in time.  I don’t know what I expected to capture but memory is fickle and so I must have wanted something to help me remember the beauty of that moment, of the hawk’s motion.

There was no music by the river that day as there is in this short video of ballet dancer David Hallberg.  And it is the combination of his motion with the music of Olafur Arnald that made me pause, mesmerized … and inspired to move.  I will never move like Mr. Hallberg but it was interesting to be reminded of the physical self when it is too easy to get stuck to a chair behind a keyboard.

Director Eric K. Yue states that the video is “… less about the dance or context of a story, but rather a state of mind …” into a dancer’s preparations. I don’t see much ballet on stage but after watching this video I am tempted to seek some out.  Enjoy the video when you can. 😉
