I foresee a certain person fishing off this pier in the near future. We actually passed a man and his son who said they sometimes catch stripers.

belle isle in ice

It may not have been the smartest move, to visit a favorite salt marsh when the windchill is below zero, but sometimes it’s about forward momentum, to keep moving, and that’s what we did this morning while the light was bright. We didn’t last long on the trail, but it was enough.
One thing that was hard to capture was how everything, every grass, branch, dried leaf, was encased in ice and they glowed in the sun, but it was too cold (for me) to stand still and frame the “perfect” shot, and my partner in crime kept telling me “we only have so many reserves of heat.” He had a destination … to the end of a particularly popular viewing area. We made it there but it was the least protected of areas and the wind hit, and we had a moment of “Go team!” before the race/skate back to the car.
And on that race/skate back to the car I saw something wonderful. Finches, cardinals, doves and other birds I can’t name, feeding at the station that had been set up. Under different circumstances, with different preparation, I could have planted my feet and photographed all of their color and variation. But given my numb fingers, I figured enough was enough and I looked forward to future opportunities.

I keep having an interesting conversation with a fellow in my life. He’s about the destination and I’m all about the journey. I race to destinations but when I journey I never know what I’ll discover like chancing upon this beautiful fungus with its lovely blue hue on a tree in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. Because I am such a creative namer when it comes to labeling prints, I simply called the image “Blue.” A framed print has been selected by Metro Housing Boston, a nonprofit providing innovative and personalized services that lead families and individuals to housing stability, economic security, and an improved quality of life. This donation was made possible by The Art Connection, a wonderful institution connecting artists with nonprofits, and providing access to original works of visual art to underserved communities.
I’ve been proud to donate works through this organization for several years. You can learn more about Metro Housing Boston and The Art Connection via the links below.

I’m having a great time playing with the early autumn light. Use these acrylic blocks as suncatchers or paperweights or both. You can find them in one of my online shops by clicking here.
I’m hoping to expand the collection throughout the autumn in time for holiday needs but I think they make unique gifts anytime of year.
In addition to my own images, I see exciting opportunities to work with the digitized images of great works of art that are now available for use in the public domain. The creative journey continues. 🙂
yellow leaves and other trees in glass

Probably one of the most popular photos I’ve taken in recent years has been that of The Yellow Leaves, an autumn scene in Dublin with pale yellow leaves falling from the white barked branches of a tree on the UCD campus. The image is now available in glass … just click here …
and as a print in a variety of sizes … just click here.
I’ve been luck enough to travel to Dublin several times over the past few years. Each journey regardless of season has presented new opportunities to engage with the beauty of the urban landscape. I’m not sure when I’ll next return but it’s great fun to work with these images in new ways.
