I do not think it was forgotten after the Yankee Swap ended and all the dinner guests had departed. I’m pretty sure she left the rose in the glass on purpose to sit upon the kitchen table. Since it took up so little room I left it there to see what time would reveal.  And as is sometimes the case, time revealed great beauty.

Quite beautiful but I am glad that some petals remain upon the stem.

New posters available in my zazzle shop.  Just a few African violet petals, some shadows resting on snow and a rainbow cupped within a shell.  As I originally studied these images, I thought them sensuous and I was reminded of something James Baldwin wrote in The Fire Next Time, “To be sensual, I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread.”  I sometimes worry that I am procrastinating as I watch sunlight settle upon a leaf … but then I just shake myself and become thankful that I could be present in the moment. 😉

That was my intention when I walked out of the Brazilian grocery store with the bag of dried rose petals.  To mix rice and roses.  Perhaps sprinkle the petals on top of steamed black rice.  Or photograph them as they fell upon a bit of mochi ice cream.  But so far I’ve just let them sit in a small bowl in the kitchen, catching that light, their pinks and golds stirring my imagination.  I did find this really cool recipe for rice with rose petals.  The ingredients of the recipe read like a poem. I’m not into pomegranate and I don’t think I can afford saffron.  We’ll see what variation on a theme unfolds in my kitchen this winter.
