It’s fun (and occasionally frustrating) figuring out  as a photographer and as a gardener how to work with light. Given the state of the yard in the new place I don’t expect an outdoor garden to come into being anytime soon but I’ve been hell-bent on creating a new lush indoor herb garden. Okay, doesn’t have to be lush … just healthy and useful.

I’m trying to experiment with a few new items especially edible flowers but for the most part it is the canonical basil, oregano, marjoram, tarragon, and rosemary. Last night I took a certain chef on a tour of the evolving herb garden. He asked what was he cooking for dinner and I said, “Hmmm. Chicken with herbs, garlic and lemon.” He harvested what he needed. As he walked away with a handful of green he turned back to say, “Do you think you can plant more tarragon? I love working with tarragon.” Not a problem.

Steve is taking great advantage of the fact that I accidentally hoarded eggs … not toilet paper, darnit … dozens of eggs. He never repeats a recipe. He’s a believer in the everlasting meal, raiding the refrigerator for whatever leftovers can be found. This omelette contained leftover chicken, leftover as well as some fresh broccoli, leftover brussel sprouts, gruyere cheese, and dried chanterelles that had been steamed in a little white wine. Some foodie friends have shared additional recipes. Let the creativity commence!

I didn’t intend to photograph this part of dinner but I felt compelled when the late afternoon sun fell upon the bowl.

The salad is composed of garbanzo beans, bell peppers, red onions, marinated artichokes, chopped tomatoes, tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. I almost topped it with the nasturtium bloom but that would have been over the top. đŸ™‚

That’s what I googled last night because somehow, and I don’t know how it happened, my indoor winter garden produced a lot of parsley. The recipe that called to me was for an Isreali Tomato and Cucumber Salad. My variation on the theme was to chop up some red and green peppers, English cucumber, tomatoes, the parsley, a little garlic and red onion, and mix with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. A simple salad. đŸ˜‰
