My attempt at growing pots and pots and pots of different nasturtium have not been greatly successful. Nice blooms on occasion but small leaves and stems on the spindly side. Though my gardening has moved outside, I still tend to do what I did indoors which was to use the same soils, same watering times, etc for every plant. I need to learn more about soils and drainage and all sorts of stuff. Even so … what has grown and bloomed has been wonderfully soul-satisfying.

I discovered a second nasturtium bloom! Just one and inspiration enough for this small spring salad of pea sprouts, red onions and tomatoes dressed with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. 😉

I’d grown them from a few seeds earlier in the winter. When the seedlings grew thick I separated them into two pots and stationed them at two different windows.  Many small leaves with long stems as the plants reached for the sun. I’ve not been the best caretaker and so I mostly watched the green leaves turn beautiful shades of gold as they dried on the vine.  But then just as I was contemplating emptying the pots in preparation for some new spring thing, I noticed a bud. Just one. It finally opened today. And again, like last year, I was taught patience. 😉

It’s mid-July, and here in New England, we’re still talking about this past winter.  The seemingly unending piles of snow will long live in the memory, and for me, so will the unexpected creativity born out of solitude watching things grow even in the dead of winter.  I’m honored to have a series of images from that period featured in the latest Alimentum The Literature of Food.  Enjoy!

It’s just that my cousin sent me a packet of viola seeds and so I became curious about the viola.  The seeds have been planted and they are sprouting quite nicely.  Meanwhile I decided to visit my favorite flower market where I picked up a few viola plants.  The owner saw me coming and he just shook his head.  “You just can’t stop yourself, can you?”

I confirmed with him that the flowers are edible and I’ve done a bit of my own research. So, if the winter was a time of the nasturtium, in their pots and on my plate, perhaps the spring will be one featuring the viola decorating this and that to be determined.

But, FYI, the nasturtium continue to grow, including a young pot of Empress of India.  The cover of the seed packet suggests that all of the blooms will be dark red.  So far all I see is a lot of dark green leaves with no indication of buds let alone blooms.  So, I’m back to practicing that patience thing. 😉
