When I made this little salad of cucumbers, microgreens and red peppers, I had no intention of photographing it but then the sunlight fell just right. What else could I do but find my camera. And then I ate it. 🙂

Now, I didn’t quite do a physical happy dance but I kind of sort of did mentally. When I was recently with my friend who needs to walk as part of her recuperation, we were slowly walking along a canal, and then I paused. She asked what I was looking at. I remember saying, “I saw just a shimmer … but the thing about spider webs is that you need the right light … wait a minute! Wait a minute! There! Can you see it? There’s the web!”

I kept inching forward despite the fact that swimming is not my greatest skill. The web was right at the water’s edge taut between trees and grape vines. I knew the light would shift soon, and it did. My friend had waited patiently for me as I got as many shots as I could. Eventually we continued on our loop. I became lost in my thoughts and then I heard, “Cynthia!” I looked around. “What?” “Don’t you see it?” She pointed out a spider’s web. And she pointed it out with expectation. With a grin, I pulled out my camera.

She continued to point out spider webs throughout the journey home.

Despite my love for E. B. White’s book Charlotte’s Web and the animated movie, I don’t go out of my way to seek out spiders. But I do have a growing appreciation for the webs. Their embodiment of complicated concepts of connections, nodes, fragility and at the same time great strength and resiliency. I can’t always see the webs around me but when I do I treasure the moment and I am grateful when others point out those webs to me.

The sun was setting producing that wonderful bright low light that spills into the living room through my rippled window. I sat across the room peering through that window. I happened to have my camera set to black and white. As I contemplated whether or not there was something to photograph as the light faded away, I noticed how that light outlined and framed the nearby floor lamp. That is the origin of this picture.

And if you’re not familiar with my rippled window reference, you can view some of the images I’ve taken via this link. Enjoy.

One of the cool things about waiting for the street light to change in the city of Boston is that you get to pause and look up and all around, and sometimes you see the sunlight fall in special ways, like on this ivy climbing the walls of a church tower.

In the hallway there’s a small wooden box tucked under a table. A spider made a web. The spider moved on but the web remained. Leaves drifted down from the plants up above. Nasturtium and parsley. Two leaves. They dried in the sun, unnoticed, until I began my spring cleaning. I decided to let them float for just a while longer.

It has not been the worst winter (at least in New England) but it has certainly been a dark winter for too many people I know. I think, in part, the light they seek is within and not without but that does not mean I cannot light a candle for them. Have a good day, folks.

I must admit, at this stage in my life, there is no body of water, however large or small, that I will pass without pausing to see what might appear.
