If there was snow on the coppery branches, then it was quickly washed away.

Well, not really. A friend hung a large poster print of a photograph I took of 4 maidens in Edwin Abbey’s mural depicting scenes from the search for the Holy Grail. As I photographed the poster and how it appeared in his home, I began to notice the reflections in the picture frame.

The layering of images, especially in black and white, appeared ghostly to me.

The effect was heightened by some rather moody music playing in the background at a local music festival.

In any case, I hope my friend enjoys his poster.

That poster print and other items are available here.

When I walked the river’s edge last Saturday, I kept peering deep into the water looking for fish and turtles. But the sun was so hot and there were so many canoeists in the water. It became quite clear that beneath those churned up waters that I would be spying no fish or turtles. So I paid attention to the surface.

Water is the common theme, with all its simplicity of form and complex properties. Unseen trees reflected in the still waters of recent rains along the Charles River Esplanade.

Light bouncing around the ice enhancing the vibrant colors of rocks held tight on a Woburn road.

The two pictures were taken years apart but will both be on exhibit this April at different events. If you’re in the neighborhood, I hope you’ll stop by to see the work of all the artists on show.
Reflections will be on display at the Artists’ Group of Charlestown 9th Annual Spring Show. Opening Reception is this Friday, April 12th, from 6:00-9:00 pm. Read more here: http://www.artistsgroupofcharlestown.com/

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of Nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances … nature brings solace for every trouble.” — Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

Well, I won’t lie. I was having a moody morning to be sure. The approaching storm outside my window didn’t help. But instead of denying that fact, I decided to use that darker energy for this post.

I may have had no choice in the matter. You see, as I sorted through images this morning for a project that must be bright and colorful, I found myself drawn toward the darker photos, those with branches and leaves in stark contrast against pale skies.

Like a persnickety child, I suddenly wanted to select only those images, the darkest of my photographs in black and white …

… and those in hues of all the shadowy shades.

Even though I knew I could not submit them for the project.

But selecting the images and spending time in a darker place was like taking a deep breath … or smacking a styrofoam bat against a tree. A bit of release. 😉

Until I could abide the color amidst the shadows and the light leaking through.

Yes, I remain a bit moody and the rains have yet to fall outside my window but I think, just maybe, it might turn into an okay day. We’ll see …

Okay, yes, that’s me in my mother’s arms a few days out of the hospital. I won’t tell you how long ago. But I will share this essay, just published in Talking Writing Magazine. People sometimes ask why do I write about a leaf blowing in the wind or photograph a sliver of light. This essay helps to explain the why of it all. Enjoy.
