it must be part of the creative journey

It better be, to crawl around on the kitchen floor, photographing the undersides of African violets. It is certainly a pleasure to look up at what is so rarely seen. There are two plants, both needing to be repotted. A winter task I am looking forward to doing and then I hope to tuck the plants away into a warm winter spot where I won’t mess with them so much. One I’m definitely watering too much but the other has new buds forming. Perhaps it is of hardier stock. We’ll see …

glass on the table

That same day there was a glass on the table, and it too filled with light. As you might imagine, it was a very hard day to concentrate. It would have been easy to pull down some shades or find a dark corner, but I do declare, I just couldn’t do it. I have no regrets even though I had to stay up a bit late to finish some writing assignments.

Not flower petals. No view through rippled windows. It is a piece of cloth draped over a chair. Yes, in that same kitchen with those magnificent windows. A bright ray of sun shone through and settled in the various folds.
The only reason I knew to look up from my laptop and in that direction was because the sun was burning my arm. My camera was near. I did not adjust the settings but what I captured I liked. The impressions of light and suggestion of form and the shifting shades of colors.

Eventually I did shift settings so that I might capture just a bit more of reality.

And after that I could play again in the light.

p.s. there was a second harvest

I returned from Ireland to my potted plant of potatoes. A second crop. Sitting in the bay window, with so much sun, the greenery was still vibrant but I figured it was time to look beneath the soil. Eventually the little potatoes were gently scrubbed and tossed into a frying pan with some meat drippings. After a fork full, my dinner companion uttered, “Mmmmm. Creamy.” Next year, I’m going to work with a bigger pot. 😉 Have a good Friday.

I could hear her voice the whole time as I settled myself on the kitchen floor and peered beneath the oven. And I can hear her voice every time I look at this photo of what I captured in that moment, of what caught my attention in the morning sun. I hear my mother saying to my father, “Yes, the web is beautiful, but why can’t that child dust a bit more?”
playing with paper

My little friend, now 7-years old, visited recently. She went to her corner, picked up some blank paper and her basket of crayons. As she sat down to draw, she said, “I enjoy playing with paper.” I could only reply, “So do I.” This year I have been playing with paper in new ways.

Spending time perusing sites like the Library of Congress Prints and National Gallery of Art. Imagining how available imagery might appear on items from a stamp to a sticker to a paper plate. It is a new creative outlet, producing products that I hope people enjoy for themselves or as gifts for others of all ages.

My image selections are influenced by the people and events around me. In recent weeks I’ve found myself in conversation with cat lovers, musicians and folks who enjoy entertaining others.

The shop where these items can be found is called StationeryWorks because it began with my desire to dress up the letters that I was sending to friends and family. It will continue to evolve. I hope you have a chance to check it out. 😉
when opportunity knocks …

What happened is this: a friend forgot her birthday flowers. They sit in a sky blue vase in Steve’s kitchen catching the morning light.

And so I have this unique opportunity, until their owner’s return, to photograph many pretty petals, in black and white and in color.
