That has been my refrain of late when friends ask what they can bring me back from their travels. Since many of the locales included beaches, I figured it would be okay to ask for shells. Just reach down and stick a shell in your pocket. I am quite honored that my friend D. engaged friends and family in the task. After she showed me pictures of the black beaches of Puerto Rico, I thought it would be fun to photograph some of her shells against fields of black.

I do not know if I will ever see an actual aurora in the sky. But as I downloaded these images from my camera, that is what I thought of.
The strands of light were produced by a little USB plasma ball. An office gift, Steve plugged it in one night to delight a young child, but turns out I was the one delighted by the light display.
I’m sure there are much clearer pictures I can take over time but I kind of like these dreamy shots. They stir my imagination. And they remind me of the words of Joan Feynman, thanking her brother for giving her the aurora. Hear her for yourself via this short Youtube video.

I do not know if I would have looked down upon this leaf as it lay on the ground and thought bird, but it does make me smile to know that a friend did think such a thing of this leaf and then went on to think that I might like to have it and so she safely tucked it away until she could give it to me as a gift. I took it home and placed it in a bowl with other leaves and stones. Every now and then I’d glance at it and squint and try to see through my friend’s eyes. Somehow it was this morning that I looked upon it and saw the bird in flight.

Not to rush time, but I am happy to share that I have two 2013 calendars available for purchase: Leaves and Petals and Butterflies and Moths. I’ve ordered them both and am quite pleased with the quality. Even though many people keep detailed schedules on their phones these days, for those who still like to put pen to paper or just glance at a wall calendar with a peaceful image, I hope these items will be of interest for personal use or as a gift. I have one more calendar planned before year’s end and its imagery will focus on food. Stay tuned. 😉

Last night, a very young friend gave me a gift. A long-stemmed sunflower with a very bear-y name. I told her that I was going to photograph it. “Why?” she asked, as little friends of that age ask quite often. “Why are you going to photograph it?” I told her so that I could share the beauty of her gift with others. And so here it is.
I took its picture throughout the day, as the sun shone through different windows, striking the many petals in many different ways.
It even seemed to bow its head as I moved it around the room as if to say, “Oh, yes, please do put me into the sun’s warm rays.”
At last I put it back upon its perch on a table covered with fellow plants. There it sits awaiting a new day of light to fall upon its form. Perhaps I’ll take its picture yet again.

You know those cards that have the seeds embedded in the paper? Well, a friend gave me such a birthday card a while back. I’m sure it was meant to be planted outside but I tend to grow things indoors now. And so I tore up the black-flecked purple card embedded with wildflower seeds, and pushed the paper beneath the soil of a planter or two. I’d almost forgotten that I had done such a thing and then one day I noticed in a pot of marjoram, new green growth of a different hue. Wildflowers! Still, I did not think that they would grow very much. But the spring sun worked its wily ways and one day I peeked into the hallway where the pot does sit, and this is what I saw.

Today I am reminded of the beauty of small gifts. A while ago a friend gave me a small potted plant of cuban oregano. I’ve been rushing around lately so while I usually remember to water the herb — thank goodness, it is a succulent — I hadn’t really paid attention to the little patch of expanding greenery. But this morning, feeling a little pokey and thus moving slower, I leaned over and pressed my nose close. And what did I discover? The sweetest scent, of course, one that brought a smile to my face…and immediately brightened my day. 😉
