I’d previously shared in “when you look up” how a photograph of the painted ceilings of Trinity Church had inspired designer Donna McNett to produce a vibrantly hued men’s tie, bow tie and pocket square collection. She did an amazing job working with a single photograph to produce something truly unique that celebrates the beauty orchestrated by painter John La Farge and presents it with a modern twist.

For 2019 we hope to collaborate once more in the production of a matching shawl and perhaps silk square. Stay tuned for further updates about that! Meanwhile there are still a few ties and pocket squares on the shelves of the shop. Drop by to see for yourself.

evolution of a scarf

In a book I found a picture and some text describing the decorative frieze band running along the upper walls of the tower inside Trinity Church. A bold, geometric pattern that struck me as multicultural. Very John La Farge. That was all the inspiration needed to grab my camera and try to find this pattern for myself.

It is a detail extremely hard to see from the floor without binoculars or a telephoto lens. My point and shoot was good enough. Working with the image was a creative challenge that turned out quite nice, I think. The final design, while first being executed as a scarf (16 x 72), is quite versatile.

The scarf will soon be available in the shop at Trinity Church. By then I may have come up with a suitable name for the design. 🙂

I’m quite pleased with the new travel thermos featuring the Purity stained glass window design. I’m a pretty happy go lucky person but every now and then even I need to add a bit of brightness to my life and I think this thermos fits! Available at the Trinity Church gift shop. At least two variations on a theme are in production, the designs inspired by details from one of my favorite windows at Trinity Church, David’s Charge to Solomon. Soon to be available exclusively at the church gift shop.

As for the rest of this day, back to paperwork (aargh!) and then out into the sunshine with my camera. More reflections upon water to view, squirrels and birds to chase down, and maybe even a church or two to be found with sunlit stained glass windows. We’ll see … Have a good day, folks!

Not only will there be a new audio tour available at Trinity Church coming soon, but during the next two weeks, a new scarf will be available inspired by the magnificent mural, Christ Woman at the Well, by John La Farge. Recently cleaned and restored with improved lighting, it is even easier now to understand the impact that this colorful mural, as well as the other interior decorations, had on society when the Copley Square building (the third building for the parish) was consecrated in 1877.

While best remembered today by many people for his later grand achievements in stained glass, John La Farge was first and foremost a painter of light and color. It is indeed an honor to be surrounded by his work and to be inspired by his creativity.

In the post light shining through, I pondered what to do with a photo of sunlight shining brightly through the dramatic decorative glass on the doors leading into the sanctuary at Trinity Church. Well, with the aid of a noreaster that left me housebound, inspiration did strike. I hope people like the results. You know me … the journey began with sunlight. It shone on the gold stenciled wall of Trinity Church in the City of Boston. The image had been digitally printed on silk before, and wonderfully so, but this time we were looking for something to be woven to enhance consistency in color and durability over time.  So, through good word of mouth, we chanced upon talented fashion designer Donna McNett, noted for her love of and background in architecture. She worked with the image, teasing out certain colors and characteristics, to produce an object of great beauty. The resulting silk cashmere scarf is warm in winter and cool in summer, and is large enough to be worn as a shawl or even a sarong.

It was a treat to learn from Donna as she shared her creative process along the way.  I am thankful for the different levels of collaboration that is possible in this day and age. Many thanks to Donna of DonaScarves for producing something exceptional in aesthetics, function and quality. Thanks to Adina Richardson Lundquist for braving the cold to model the scarf (and its matching cuff bracelet) and to photographer Rodrigo Larios for sharing his skills.

The scarf, retailing at $94.95, is available exclusively at the shop at Trinity Church. Its current winter hours (assuming no Noreasters!) are Wednesday – Saturday 11:00 am – 4:30 pm, and Sunday 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Quantities are limited.
