One of the great pleasures for me in living in the Greater Boston area is ease of access to nature. And by “ease of access” that can mean taking two trains, a bus and then walking half a mile or so, but still, I know that I am lucky to be where I am and that on any given day I can make my way to at least two major rivers, the Charles, and in the case of this image applied to a pouch and on stationery, the Mystic River. That was how my creative process worked … in the dark of winter what might I like to see on the kitchen table or on a window sill or weighing down my papers … something that would remind me that spring will return. Acrylic blocks that fill with light, in sizes 4×4 and 6×6.
As we ease into autumn, at least so far here in New England, I hope to create time to sort through my images and create more of these lovely items. Until then you can also periodically peek at my Redbubble shop and see if you find something to your liking. 🙂

Not only will there be a new audio tour available at Trinity Church coming soon, but during the next two weeks, a new scarf will be available inspired by the magnificent mural, Christ Woman at the Well, by John La Farge. Recently cleaned and restored with improved lighting, it is even easier now to understand the impact that this colorful mural, as well as the other interior decorations, had on society when the Copley Square building (the third building for the parish) was consecrated in 1877.
While best remembered today by many people for his later grand achievements in stained glass, John La Farge was first and foremost a painter of light and color. It is indeed an honor to be surrounded by his work and to be inspired by his creativity.

I wrote about it on this blog last year or so ago. Of sitting by the pond in Copley Square on my lunch break. It was a bright sunny day. The surface of the water mirrored all that was around from trees to buildings. But of course the water was clear and so you could see the leaves and other detritus on the pond’s bottom. But the water circulates as well and so things floated on the surface. In the end there was a wonderful layering of light and color that became bright ribbons as the wind added even more motion.

I’ve been quite pleased with my own tote bag. While there are several options when ordering through the site, I tend toward the Basic Style with Black Cotton Strap. This particular creative expression began as part housecleaning and part trying to entertain myself while housebound during a blizzard (a blizzard which continues, by the way). Flipping through a stack of books I haven’t read in ages, I came across a book about Japanese Noh robes, Patterns and Poetry, produced by the Rhode Island School of Design. A visually stunning book. I was motivated to pick up some colored pens and paper and see what might emerge as I lingered over each colorful page.
Nature is a predominant theme of the costume designs, and so as the world turned white around me I decided to free sketch and see what might happen. Drawing a heron is bit beyond me at this stage but I knew I could handle branches, leaves, berries and butterflies. I scratched a few lines on paper and then moved on to GIMP.
What evolved was the height of simplicity, my little nature sequence of leaves, then berries and then a butterfly in a field. Not quite Picasso but rather fun, I have to say, on a gray day in a troubled world, to produce a colorful flight of fancy. Enjoy.
