And now that I am decidedly back in the U.S. for a bit, I am able to return to familiar haunts, like this Woburn field that I’ve been photographing over the years.

oregano in the hallway and …

Some folks think I yearn for a big field to garden, but I don’t. I enjoy my few clay pots and random mugs filled with dirt, tucked in all sorts of corners and moved about as my whim and the sun does strike.
It has been fun this year to grow flowers, herbs and the occasional vegetable. The trailing green growth and splashes of color have been inspiring, as well as occasionally quite tasty. Most of the herbs have died back or faded away completely with a few exceptions like the oregano.
I planted a few new seeds on Saturday. Spicy cress, fenugreek and more nasturtium. The fenugreek has already started to sprout. Perhaps I’ll be able to harvest it for Christmas. On Sunday I picked up some paperwhite bulbs with a goal to plant them in January and perhaps soon after photograph white winter blooms against a backdrop of falling snow. Until then, I have these herbs and, oh yes, that violet.

I still have rocks to photograph, an acorn cap, and even the wings of a wasp. I am grateful for the “nature offerings” that people give to me with the simple charge of “try photographing this.” Today’s offering that called to me was a branch with many curled leaves. It is an evolving photo shoot that began with the branch on a black plate. And then, as usual, I wondered what would happen if I filled the plate with water. And then, as usual, wonderful things happened, I think.

I am not a full-time food photographer or stylist, but I do have fun on occasion with a piece of fruit or a slice of vegetable sitting on a dark plate in the sunlight. Well, I personally love 6 x 6 frames, like the following, which easily stack on surfaces in the kitchen or can hang, often in a series, on the wall. This particular image of a romanesco broccoli was purchased for a gentleman who studies fractals, and loves to eat. 😉

fallen leaves and blossoms

As I was racing around this morning, I realized that one of the orchid plants had dropped two leaves while the second plant had dropped a leaf as well. New leaves grew on both so they still hang on but I suspect I’ve been too free with the watering pail.
As I gathered the leaves I could not help but notice the lovely colors and textures of their dying flesh.
And then I remembered that when their blossoms had fallen earlier in the summer, I’d collected them in a small dish to see what might happen to the petals over time. Out of sight, out of mind … but I found the dish and this is what the petals look like.
