Posts Tagged ‘edible flowers’

After confirming that the flowers were edible, Ricky of Ricky’s Market asked me to tell him how they tasted. Well, they don’t taste like much to me, but what wonderful brightness they add to a salad. Like sunlight.

I have to return to Ricky’s soon and I am contemplating picking up some white flowers. If I place their petals upon the dark green leaves of spinach and kale will I be reminded of the moon this time? We shall see. 🙂

I discovered a second nasturtium bloom! Just one and inspiration enough for this small spring salad of pea sprouts, red onions and tomatoes dressed with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. 😉

It’s mid-July, and here in New England, we’re still talking about this past winter.  The seemingly unending piles of snow will long live in the memory, and for me, so will the unexpected creativity born out of solitude watching things grow even in the dead of winter.  I’m honored to have a series of images from that period featured in the latest Alimentum The Literature of Food.  Enjoy!

I thought this particular pot held the Empress of India Nasturtium.  I’ve been waiting for the bright red flowers but so far all the flowers are this amazing bright orange.

In a medium black bowl I planted my cousin’s viola seeds.  After a near fatal encounter with a too bright sun and too little water, so far all goes well.

Not sure this nasturtium leaf is emerald, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2013, but I think it is a lovely shade of green just the same.  And it is very tasty, in fact peppery, sprinkled on top of salads. 😉
