Indeed, ice did cover the windows this morning creating beautiful backgrounds, far off landscapes and whole universes.

I even found a rainbow.

While I cannot say I am ready for the arctic blast that is apparently striking the east coast next week, I am a bit curious to see what icy formations will appear on the windows next.

Not flower petals. No view through rippled windows. It is a piece of cloth draped over a chair. Yes, in that same kitchen with those magnificent windows. A bright ray of sun shone through and settled in the various folds.
The only reason I knew to look up from my laptop and in that direction was because the sun was burning my arm. My camera was near. I did not adjust the settings but what I captured I liked. The impressions of light and suggestion of form and the shifting shades of colors.

Eventually I did shift settings so that I might capture just a bit more of reality.

And after that I could play again in the light.

In Copley Square, there is a fountain where I like to sit, eat my hot dog, and then, if I’m lucky, photograph leaves floating on the surface of the water. This week few leaves floated but there was plenty of trash, and the trash was blocking some sort of vent or drain and so the water was swirling erratically. And then a little kid poured in a bottle of bubbles, and somebody’s dog jumped in to chase the pigeons and I thought, quite frankly, “This sucks.” But then you know what happened as it always does? The sun came out … The trash did not disappear but there was a beauty revealed, too, I think. But that’s just my perspective.

… filling the folds of the living room curtains

… reminding me of the stained glass windows I’ve been privileged to photograph of late

… . and in those windows to see how the sunlight strikes the glass, filling the folds of the robes of the saints and angels and the ordinary folk living their lives

… and I can’t help but think, given all that’s happening in all parts of the world, how lucky I am to be able to sit for a moment and capture the sun’s path across a single window

… I do see nebula …

… and supernovas …

… and all sorts of stellar events …

… all within a single leaf, found on the ground yesterday, as I walked home.

And as I carried that single leaf in one hand and all of my groceries in the other hand, I had to chuckle because I was reminded of how my parents worried when I went out walking by myself. They thought that my head would be lost in the clouds. How right they were. Anyway … have a good day, folks. 😉

last rays of sunlight falling on the kitchen table
Well, in my walk through history with Mr. Horne, I’ve been introduced to a number of people who have stirred my imagination. One of those people is Adolphe Appia. Like Edward Gordon Craig (for whom I did post an interlude extra), Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) transformed set design in the theater world by developing and exploring, among other ideas, new theories of using light and shadows as a way to unify productions.

Adolphe Appia and his set design for Parsifal
Appia’s (and Craig’s) dark illustrations struck a chord. As if I didn’t love shadows before, but now, more so than ever, when I see shadows lengthening upon a table or wall, I wonder: what scene is being set for what story? Thus, the reason why I photographed sunlight on a kitchen table. 😉

more light falls on the kitchen table
Perhaps, one day I will sit with these images and write a story. Meanwhile, if you’d like to learn more about Appia, in December 2013 an architectural group produced this great visual overview of Appia’s work. Here is his Wikipedia page listing works and references. And highly recommend this brief read by Pericles Lewis of Yale. Below are more of Appia’s drawings from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
