In the Shadow of the Sun is a 2013 documentary directed and produced by Harry Freeland. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago on PBS. As described on the film’s website, it was filmed over six years and tells the story of two albino people, one a successful older man and one a young boy, both living in Tanzania. The viewer learns of the myths that have come to be associated with these white people, the taunts endured, and in recent years the ritualized mutilations and murders. You also see people overcoming oppression, children striving to learn and to be seen as equal and indeed beautiful, and parents doing all they can to make their dreams reality.
While researching the film and trying to learn more about albinism, a condition that can affect people of all ethnicities, I came across recent articles about albino fashion models. There were a sequence of images of young people with an absence of melanin in their skin, ghostly, different and fiercely defiant in their attitude to be labeled as anything but beautiful. Fashion has been on my mind a great deal given the collaboration taking place with Zoe Langosy, so I sent her a random note asking, without really expecting an answer, how would an artist illustrate an albino. She sent a note back sharing she had done so as part of her honors thesis where she had produced a book, The Marriage of Fashion and Nature.

“It was a year long project. I decided to do a series of images depicting fashion made out of nature. At that stage, as a young student, my purpose was to create a perfect character and for this scene I just instinctively chose an albino and dressed him in a kimono made of pussy willows.”
With each image, including that of the albino is lyrical text. While yet unpublished, following are a few glimpses of this beautiful handmade book.

… gearing up for the various open studios and spring exhibits. The greater Boston area is rich with opportunities and it has been a pleasure taking part in different ways from volunteer to exhibitor. Here are some of the venues where you’ll find my work alongside the work of many other fine artists, and other publication news.

Somerville Open Studios Volunteer Exhibit @ Diesel Cafe, Davis Square, Somerville, April 8 – May 20, 2016, 11 x 14 framed print of a scene along the Mystic River

Cambridge Open Studios @ Riverside Gallery, May 15 – 16, 2016, 12-6pm, 11 x 14 framed metallic print of a sunlit Torch Lily

This 11 x 14 framed metallic print of sunlight flowing over water has been submitted for an upcoming exhibit. More details if it is accepted.
And I’m happy to report that I have four grayscale images appearing in the Winter 2016 Issue of The MacGuffin, a respected international literary magazine based out of Schoolcraft College in Livonia, MI. One of those four images will be featured on the cover of The Mini-MacGuffin, a best of issue that editors will hand out as part of their participation at the upcoming AWP Conference & Bookfair in Los Angeles. More details as the publications become publicly available.

As artist Zoe Langosy and I move forward on a new collaboration, I follow her lead. And what a fabulous journey it is. I’m not the most stylish person on the block but even I know of Valentino, Alexander McQueen and a few other fashion makers out there. Zoe has introduced me to a part of the fashion world I knew little about, fashion illustration. It is amazing to me how an artist can translate the signature apparel of designers like Valentino into another medium that both promotes the original work of the designer and yet expresses the unique skills and vision of the illustrator. In this visual age there appears to be a renaissance taking place with regard to fashion illustration. Many artists, many styles. Collage is Zoe’s medium of choice.

Creative Swatch by Zoe Langosy, pairing dress by Valentino with photographs by Cynthia Staples
I want her to write more about her creative process. How she can look at this dress by Valentino and then imagine collaging an illustration using my photos. This is a creative swatch that she has put together to layout the pictures she intends to cut up. From top to bottom they are birch trees and grasses along the Mystic River, ice crystals on a window, and sunlight shining through an icicle.
Stay tuned for future updates!

I must admit, at this stage in my life, there is no body of water, however large or small, that I will pass without pausing to see what might appear.
the bee-friendly garden, a review

Bees are not the only pollinators in this world but they are a major one. There are many different species of bees. Growing up in Virginia, I’d heard of sweat bees, and knew bumblebees on sight, but it was the honeybee with its soft gold and black coloring that I most thought of when I heard the word bee. I took for granted its production of honey and the wax harvested from colonies for my candles. And I was quick to bat the insect away when I walked through a field of flowers. As for its role as pollinator, I didn’t think too much about that nor did many until reports of colony collapse disorder made national and international news.

As noted in the introduction of The Bee-Friendly Garden, “over 70 percent of the world’s plants depend on the pollination services of bees, including many nuts, fruits, tomatoes, peppers, or berries.” While the world might survive without bees, it would be a very different place to say the least.

One of the delights of this book is that the authors, a professional garden designer and an ecologist, educate, inspire and encourage. Regarding the U.S., they describe the difference between native bee species and honeybees, and how bees and wasps look similar but behave very differently. Honeybees with their yellow and black banded bodies are probably the most common image of bees, but native bees come in many shapes, sizes and colors, their bodies evolved to collect the pollen from a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees. Lists are provided by region of bee-friendly garden compositions, and in turns out that many of those same gardens — a mix of annuals, perennials and more — can attract and support other important pollinators like bats, butterflies and hummingbirds.
The book is an incredible resource and reference guide and I would suggest it as a wonderful addition to one’s gardening library. The authors make clear with straightforward content that you don’t need to be a master gardener or landscape designer in order to create beauty around you and do some good in the world as well. As some of you know, I love to give seeds and plants to friends and family who live across the U.S. This year I will certainly be using this book’s regional plants lists to help guide my selection of seeds.

… books by Bruno Munari on drawing trees and drawing the sun. Online descriptions suggest they were written for children but I think what is meant is children of all ages. Unexpected finds as I walked through the library. Thank goodness I have a big backpack.
