Got home late yesterday so decided to fix a simple dinner.  Here are a few of the ingredients basking in sunlight.

My Late Light Dinner Menu

* day-old bread, slice, drizzle with olive oil, toast and then rub with garlic

*fresh broccoli, slice, toss into oiled frying pan with chopped oyster mushrooms, scallions and more garlic

* add bit of chicken broth, salt and pepper. cover. turn down flame.

*sit down. take a breather before standing to peer in refrigerator — I found last pieces of smoked salmon.

*find a big plate. pile on flavored veggies, a few slices of bread, and the salmon.

*retire to big comfy chair in the living room. hope you didn’t forget fork else you’ll have to get up again!

Ricky’s Flower Market is a lovely shop in the heart of Union Square in Somerville, Massachusetts.  When his door opens April-ish, then you know spring has arrived even if there’s still snow on the ground.  When I need a visual respite, I like to wander through his indoor/outdoor space that’s filled with annuals, perennials, herbs, clay pots and everything and anything else needed for gardening.  When the sun finally popped out this morning, I decided to make my way over there, and I am glad I did.

an impromptu salad

place spinach greens on a plate

add sliced grape tomatoes and radishes

pick sunflower sprouts and drop on top

sprinkle with garlic powder, black pepper and sea salt

drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

eat!

Why have a potted nasturtium in the kitchen?  Well, they are easy to take care and when it’s late and you’re hungry and you’re trying to eat healthy, simply pull a few leaves from the plant.  Layer the leaves on a saucer.  Slice a couple of tomatoes.  Pile the slices on the leaves.  Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Glass of white wine or water on the side.  Done. Prep time?  About a minute and thirty seconds or so. 😉

When I picked up the O’Keeffe book at the used bookstore recently, I was expecting to be influenced by paintings of leaves and flowers and those bones.  I was not expecting the image of The Plums (1920) to remain with me so strongly.  So far, I have only purchased 1 plum.  We’ll see what the future holds.

I can’t yet see the words but I feel them, somewhere, somehow, embodied in this apple with its lovely leaf.  Yes, a weight of hidden words.  I hope to find them before the month’s end, to glimpse their fragile figures before they disappear into the ether.  Or at least before the apple disappears inside me.
