I have this pair of earrings that sit on the windowsill.  They are broken but their beauty is such that I cannot make myself throw them away.  When I get into a cleaning mood, when I just want to create some space, I almost reach for them.  But then the light … yes, always the light … will strike the pieces revealing a uniqueness that once tossed I will never find again.  That is the thought that came to mind this morning as I found this image on my camera.  I often have trouble labeling a photo but instantly the words “broken light” appeared in my head.  And those two words brought to mind an inspiring blog, Broken Light: A Photography Collective.  The site presents the powerful words and images of those living with, or affected, by mental illness.  If you have not had a chance to view Broken Light, I highly recommend a visit. 😉

Only moments before the bag had held zucchini or scallions perhaps.  Now it lay crumpled on the table fodder for my imagination as sunlight filled its cavities.

At first I thought of folds of cloth and crinkled skirts like women wore so long ago.  But then as the rays of light shifted, I imagined glaciers and ice caves illuminated in rainbow colors throughout an arctic day.

The sun soon dipped behind a building and with it most of the light but just enough remained for one last shot that made me think of a cavern opening.

A mountainous landscape in some far away place.  Stars shine in the dark waters flowing past rocky shores.  At least that’s what I see on screen.

But in reality?

In fact, the landscape is two pieces of paper juxtaposed.  I had been working with paper on the kitchen table when afternoon sunlight hit these two — a textured brown and a sheet of black — in such a way that I could not help but snap a photo.  Later, on the computer, I desaturated the color and then my imagination took over. 😉

Well, I won’t lie.  I was having a moody morning to be sure.  The approaching storm outside my window didn’t help.  But instead of denying that fact, I decided to use that darker energy for this post.

I may have had no choice in the matter.  You see, as I sorted through images this morning for a project that must be bright and colorful, I found myself drawn toward the darker photos, those with branches and leaves in stark contrast against pale skies.

Like a persnickety child, I suddenly wanted to select only those images, the darkest of my photographs in black and white …

… and those in hues of all the shadowy shades.

Even though I knew I could not submit them for the project.

But selecting the images and spending time in a darker place was like taking a deep breath … or smacking a styrofoam bat against a tree.  A bit of release. 😉

Until I could abide the color amidst the shadows and the light leaking through.

Yes, I remain a bit moody and the rains have yet to fall outside my window but I think, just maybe, it might turn into an okay day.  We’ll see …

… captured in leaves, on petals and upon the surface of a few other items in the kitchen.

In an old journal, I found the following words.  Perhaps one day I will polish them, but even a bit rough, I feel inclined to share them, paired with some new images.  I suppose I should be sharing a poem, given that it’s Put a Poem in Your Pocket Day, but perhaps there is poetry embedded in these words and images.

Journal Entry:  Several friends think that I never go to the dark places. That I always see the light in the world. The glass is always at least half-full.  Lemons can always be turned into tasty lemonade.  There is no dark so dense where some bit of brightness cannot be found.  At such accusations, I usually say nothing or  I perhaps point out the beauty of fallen petals upon the ground. I do not to say with indignation, you are wrong because I do go to the dark places. Don’t we all?  I do not say, I have seen the dark clouds descend from once-bright skies and settle over once-clear roads.  Haven’t we all?  But, for me, you know what always happens … even upon the darkened road … eventually?  Winds come and blow the clouds away.  If there is a lingering dark fog, the sun rises and burns it to a cooling mist, refreshing upon the skin. When I’m in the darkest place, pitch black, I don’t always see the light but I know it’s there somewhere.  It has to be. I can feel it even if I cannot see it.  Don’t the blind feel the sun on their faces?

Maybe that’s why I write, why I photograph.  To show that no matter how dark, light penetrates and reveals certain glories. In the contrasts, the shadows created, the silhouettes that emerge, unique beauty is revealed. That is what I want to convey, in whatever medium feels right in the moment.  The simple beauty in this life.

I do not want to ignore the dark, or the fears that spring to life though I may not always share such fears with friends.  I will walk the dark roads until the sun rises.  I will carry a flashlight or a lit candle and if these items should fail then I will take a deep breath and raise my eyes to the sky and focus on the tiny beacons of the stars.  And who knows, I might even see a sliver of moon. All I know is I may walk in the dark – we all do at some point in our lives — but I will not stay there.  I will not.
